PHASE TRANSITIONS WITHOUT THERMODYNAMIC LIMIT The Crucial Rôle of Possible and Impossible Fluctuations The Treatment of Inhomogeneous Scenaria in the Microcanonical Ensemble

چکیده

“In the thermodynamic limit the canonical and the microcanonical ensemble are equivalent in all details and generality. ” Statements like this are found in many textbooks of statistical thermodynamics. It is the purpose of this contribution to show that this is not so, and, more importantly, that the microcanonical ensemble allows for significant insight into the mechanism of first order phase-transitions which is hidden in the canonical ensemble. E.g.: at the liquid-gas transition under given pressure large and fluctuating spatial inhomogeneities are created. This surface entropy Ssurf governs the surface tension. At the critical point TcrSsurf compensates even the surface energy of the ground state leading to the vanishing of the surface tension. In the canonical ensemble at given pressure, however, inhomogeneities become suppressed by ∼ e−N2/3fsurf/Tboil , (1)

Self-gravitating Gas: Ii. Local Physical Magnitudes and Fractal Structures

We complete our study of the self-gravitating gas by computing the fluctuations around the saddle point solution for the three statistical ensembles (grand canonical, canonical and microcanonical). Although the saddle point is the same for the three ensembles, the fluctuations change from one ensemble to the other. The zeroes of the small fluctuations determinant determine the position of the c...

PHYSICS Microcanonical Thermostatistics, the basis for a New Thermodynamics, " heat can flow from cold to hot " , and nuclear multifragmentation. The correct treatment of Phase Separation after 150 years of statistical mechanics a Abstract. Equilibrium statistics of finite Hamiltonian systems is fundamentally described by the microcanonical ensemble (ME) [1]. Canonical, or grand-canonical parti...

Analysis of Phase Transitions in the Mean-field Blume–emery–griffiths Model By

In this paper we give a complete analysis of the phase transitions in the mean-field Blume–Emery–Griffiths lattice-spin model with respect to the canonical ensemble, showing both a second-order, continuous phase transition and a first-order, discontinuous phase transition for appropriate values of the thermodynamic parameters that define the model. These phase transitions are analyzed both in t...

Phase Transitions in Small Systems: Microcanonical vs. Canonical Ensembles

We compare phase transition(-like) phenomena in small model systems for both microcanonical and canonical ensembles. Our model systems correspond to a few classical (non-quantum) point particles confined in a one-dimensional box and interacting via Lennard-Jones-type pair potentials. Already by means of these simple examples it can be shown that microcanonical thermodynamic functions of a small...
